With former SportsCenter anchor Josh Elliott leaving Good Morning America at ABC to join NBC Sports, Awful Announcing is placed ever so briefly into the delightfully tawdry world of network morning television. It’s a very entertaining place to be, and if you ever have a chance to read Top of the Morning by Brian Stelter, I highly recommend that you do. Another sports personality has furthered his ties to that realm, which means we get to stick around for a little bit longer.

In a move to counter Elliott’s departure, Michael Strahan will join GMA, at first on a part-time basis. According to TMZ, the former New York Giant will appear on the show three to four times per week, in the 8 a.m. hour. He will continue to be an analyst for the NFL on Fox, as well as (more importantly) the co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael.

For now, Strahan is not a direct replacement for Elliott, but seemingly a chance to get the jump on NBC. With Elliott not allowed to appear on daytime television for six months, it would seem like his hiring at NBC Sports would be a little bit of a placeholder for an eventual spot on the Today show. If ABC can get their new GMA cast in place before Elliott returns, it might be key to stopping the bleeding over at the show.

We only wish the SportsCenterFox Sports Live rivalry were this entertaining. Or a thing at all.
