The New York Daily News just published their list of the 50 Most Powerful People in New York Sports.  The Top 5 includes MSG emperor James Dolan, Roger Goodell, Derek Jeter, Giants CEO John Mara, and Hal Steinbrenner.  It’s an interesting listicle combining athletes and executives from the local and national sports scene, even if it is impossible to really quantify.

But the real goodness here is in the reader vote that the Daily News published alongside its own rankings.  According to New York sports fans, the most powerful person in sports is Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.  That isn’t really a surprise given his retirement tour is singlehandedly bringing the entire sport of baseball to its knees.

The #2 person in the eyes of the fan is Mike Francesa.  Because the state of #MongoNation is indeed strong.

Eli Manning and Henrik Lundqvist follow and then Jason Giambi rounds out the Top 5.

Wait a minute… Jason Giambi?!?!

The same 43 year old Jason Giambi that has appeared in 15 games for the Cleveland Indians this year?!?  The same Jason Giambi that last played for the New York Yankees in 2008?!?  That Jason Giambi?

Yep!  Here’s the proof…

The Daily News reasons, “Giambi hasn’t played for the Bombers since 2008, but the elder statesman (now a DH with Cleveland) obviously still has an impact with sports fans in New York.”

And somehow that’s not the only delicious ridiculousness with this poll.  Vince McMahon at #6? Former Jets quarterback Richard Todd?  He played in the 1970s!  The legend of Marvelous Marv Throneberry and the 1962 Mets?

This is no fan list, this is the best Mongo prank yet.
