Incredibly sad news out of Dallas yesterday – ESPN Dallas writer Richard Durrett died unexpectedly at the age of 38. While official reports cite the cause as unknown, colleagues on Twitter alluded to a brain aneurysm.
Durrett covered the Texas Rangers at ESPN after joining the company in 2009. He had previously worked for the Dallas Morning News for nine years. The team released a statement after his passing paying tribute to the reporter.
Mr. Durrett was a versatile journalist in every sense of the word with both his written and electronic coverage. He was always willing to contribute to Rangers publications and even did occasional radio play-by-play on Rangers broadcasts in spring training and the regular season.
The thoughts and prayers of our entire organization go out to Mr. Durrett’s family.
The outpouring of shock and grief on Twitter from those who did and didn’t know Durrett was immediate.
I have pretty strong evidence that Richard texted at least 400 people Sunday wishing them Happy Father's Day. Which is totally unsurprising.

Durrett is survived by a wife and two young children. It’s just incredibly heartbreaking news and our thoughts are with them as well.
