You may have heard once or twice in recent weeks, months and years the the Big Ten is expanding, adding Rutgers and Maryland to their now 14-team conference. That means that the conference will slowly integrate them in to the league’s media offerings, which includes Big Ten Network. They announced hirings specific to both schools on Wednesday.
The biggest news is that Eric LeGrand will work for BTN as a football studio analyst. LeGrand, who was paralyzed during an October 2010 game making a tackle and has turned his subsequent recovery into an inspiration for those in New Jersey and beyond, has also worked for the Rutgers radio network and SNY as an analyst. He will join former Rutgers and New York Jets quarterback Ray Lucas in the studio.
Former New York Giant Shaun O’Hara will serve as a game analyst for Rutgers, while on the basketball side, former Rutgers player and coach Bob Wenzel will serve as a game and studio analyst. New York Mets voice Josh Lewin, who has done some work for BTN in the past, will call basketball games. Tina Cervasio will roam the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Maryland is no slouch itself with talent hires. Former NFL Pro Bowler Shawne Merriman will serve as a football studio analyst on Terps games. Meanwhile, Washington Capitals voice Joe Beninati will do play-by-play for both football and lacrosse, calling football with former Maryland QB Scott McBrien.
Gary Williams will return to BTN as a basketball studio analyst, where he will be joined by Drew Nicholas. Dan Bonner will be a game analyst for men’s hoops, while Christy Winters-Scott will work women’s hoops. Play-by-play men Dave Johnson (soccer) and Frank Hanrahan (women’s basketball) have also been hired.
