Ever since the Confederations Cup, we have known that there is a distinct faction of Brazilians that have very little interest in their nations spending billions to host a soccer tournament in which they will see very little of the profit. We can enjoy the World Cup for its entertainment as sport and also see the corruption and injustices that have been brought on by its very existence. It’s a complex issue, to say the least.

Protests have already begun in Sao Paolo, where Thursday the opening match was held. There was one arrest made, but one CNN person ended up in a bad situation. Shasta Darlington and her producer Barbara Arvantitidis were injured during a police tear gas-ing of a crowd.

It appears that Darlington and her producer are both safe, which is all that matters. It does give this World Cup, and FIFA — whom already have the trust of next to no one — an ominous beginning.
