The firestorm over a potential Washington Redskins name change is going to be thrown in front of a national audience during Game 3 of the NBA Finals. An abbreviated version of the below commercial will air in seven markets on Tuesday.

The markets that will see the ad are Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Sacramento, San Francisco, and of course, Washington. I’m sure this is going to end so well for everyone involved – more people are going to be pissed off about the name, more people are going to be passionately defending the name, and Dan Snyder will continue to stick his fingers in his ears and pretend nothing is happening.

We’re getting to a point where intervention seems inevitable. Lines have been drawn in the sand, and the anti-Redskins crowd isn’t going anywhere – if anything, they’re only getting louder. Until the name is changed, either by choice or mandate, this conversation isn’t going away. Broadcasting this ad to some of the biggest markets in the country is only going to illustrate the strong feelings that many have against the name, and thrust the issue further into the spotlight. The debate isn’t going away, no matter how many bold proclamations either side makes.
