After what seemed like a hundred year drought, football finally returned last night with the first NFL preseason game in Canton, Ohio at the Hall of Fame Game.  The first kickoff of the year is always a great annual moment in the sports calendar… and then you realize you're watching 3 quarters of Nick Stephens and Matt Moore dueling and other players battling for roster spots that don't even exist.

Nonetheless, football rules all and last night's overnight rating on NBC was higher than any game of the Stanley Cup Final on the peacock…

The Stanley Cup peaked with a 5.8 overnight for Game 6 of the Blackhawks-Bruins series.  Believe it or not, the 6.7 rating is actually down in comparison to the last time the Hall of Fame Game appeared on NBC in 2010.  But the rating also beat several NBA playoff games, NASCAR races, golf tournaments, soccer games, and pretty much every other sport that is not the NFL.

To think that a bunch of fourth stringers and camp bodies playing a meaningless football game could be the MOST WATCHED SHOW IN ALL OF PRIMETIME is truly astonishing.  No wonder Roger Goodell thinks he rules the world.
