On the final night of World Cup Qualifying, the impossible happened in CONCACAF. The USA saved the World Cup hopes of fierce rivals Mexico. Entering the night, Mexico needed a win or tie to clinch a berth in Brazil or a USA win or tie against Panama. The only scenario where Mexico wouldn't survive would be a Panama win and a loss against Costa Rica. Approaching the end of the final round's games everything was turning against El Tri.
On the road at Costa Rica, Mexico couldn't take care of their own business as they were trailing 2-1. At the same time, Panama had a 2-1 lead over the United States at home. Those results would send Panama to the intercontinental playoffs against New Zealand while Mexico would embarrassingly be out of the World Cup altogether.
Then, in the second minute of injury time Graham Zusi headed in the USA equalizer. This led to one of the more unbelievable sights you will ever see in world soccer.
Mexican announcers saying "We love you! We love you forever and ever! God bless America!" Hey, it beats getting bags of pee thrown at you, right?
Yes, that's the Mexican announcers jubilantly shouting "GOOOOLLLL" for a goal scored by the United States. And, they even broke into English to do so! How thoughtful. Aron Johannsson added the 3rd for an elementary USA victory seconds after Panamanian hearts were scattered around the field in little tiny pieces. By then, the Mexican announcers were already in full celebration mode thanks to their neighbors/rivals to the north. Oh, and go read the translation of what they say in Spanish that calls the Mexican national team morons and punks and says that the United States is a better soccer nation than Mexico.
Just another night in CONCACAF.
