Liverpool vs Manchester United is one of the great rivalries of world soccer. However, the rivalry has been tarnished by the chants and songs of supporters who mock tragedies that afflicted both clubs. Just last year, Manchester United fans took part in an offensive chant in a game vs Wigan before a match with Liverpool mocking the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, where 96 Liverpool fans died at an FA Cup match.
Now, some wanker running the offical Liverpool Twitter account has responded with a joke referencing Liverpool fan songs that mock the Munich air disaster of 1958, where 23 people died on a flight carrying the Manchester United team back from a European Cup game.
The official LFC Twitter account asked for 3 songs for Sunday's game against United. One fan replied with songs that are used to make fun of the Munich tragedy and the LFC account joked that the songs were on the dressing room iPod. “Come fly with me“ relating to the plane that crashed. “Always look on the bright side of life” which is unfortunately code for “Always look on the runway for ice”. And “I like to move it, move it“, code for “I like to Munich, Munich”.
I'm a Liverpool fan and I admit this is embarrassing for a club that has had more than its fair share of PR disasters in the last year. Liverpool issued an apology, but not on their Twitter account, which is where it needs to be.
Even if you're not aware of the ugly history here, the fact that someone working for the club, with the ability to speak for the club, would make this attempt at humor makes you want to take a shower.
It's amazing that individuals time and again representing official team accounts lack any kind of responsibility or common sense. Forget taking Twitter accounts away from athletes behaving badly on social media, take them away from the clubs first.
