ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has inked an eight-year extenstion with ESPN (news that we brought you earlier this month), and with the confirmation of his extension, we've learned some new details.

The most noteworthy of the details is pairing Herbstreit alongside Colin Cowherd during his Tuesday spot on College Football Live. Herbstreit is an experienced radio voice, as is Cowherd, and the pair could have a unique chemistry that turns the studio show into more of a discussion/debate hour, like when Cowherd was on SportsNation. I get the feeling that will drive people up the wall, but Herbstreit at least has other roles to fall back on, and I doubt ESPN would turn one of their flagship college football programs during the week into debate show #14 (at least when Lou Holtz and Mark May aren't around).

Herbstreit will also continue his duties as a commentator for the Rose Bowl and BCS National Champoinship Game, transitioning into one of the two College Football Playoff semifinal games in 2015 and the championship game as well. Herbstreit will also remain on College Gameday and call ESPN's Saturday Night Football showcase game.

Locking up Herbstreit is huge for ESPN, especially after Fox signed away Bill Raftery yesterday. Herbstreit is an incredibly versatile performer in the college football world, and any network would be happy to bring him aboard. But with this extension, he's not going anywhere for awhile.
