Rarely does anything surprise me anymore, but I never quite thought I'd live long enough to see a state governor go on sports talk radio and call an NFL beat writer an idiot and a dope.

Alas, here we are.

And surprise, surprise, the New York Jets are to blame.

New Jersey Governor and long-speculated future presidential candidate Chris Christie was on Boomer & Carton on WFAN in New York this morning and had a go at New York Daily News Jets beat writer Manish Mehta.  First let's set the scene as to why Christie would single out Mehta in this charade…

It all started after the most recent Jets preseason game this weekend against the Giants.  Rex Ryan was playing Mark Sanchez, his 1 or 1A quarterback for the season, late in the fourth quarter of the meaningless contest.  Of course, Sanchez ended up getting hit and injuring his shoulder.  That injury and Geno Smith's 3 INTs has led to… wait for it… a quarterback circus for the Jets.  It also led to this combative Rex Ryan press conference with a media who has now fully turned against him.  (Who couldn't have seen that coming?)

Mehta in particular was critical of Ryan, even going as far as to tweeting he should be FIRED after a decision made in a preseason game, which may be a first in the history of sportswriting.

Mehta also led his postgame column with calling for Ryan's head in this brutal takedown…

"Rex Ryan took ineptitude and incompetence to new heights with a boneheaded decision Saturday night that ultimately could seal his fate as the head coach of the Jets.

Ryan, apparently consumed with winning a trophy of a Peanuts character, vaulted into the annals of dumb moves by putting Mark Sanchez into the fourth quarter of the Jets’ meaningless preseason 24-21 overtime win over the Giants at MetLife Stadium. Sanchez promptly suffered a shoulder injury that clouds the Jets’ quarterback situation.

Ryan, whose transparent attempts to placate new general manager John Idzik for the past eight months have turned him into a sad shell of his former iconoclastic self, turned testy in his postgame press conference. When his predictable talking points were challenged, Ryan grew agitated.

He knows that he screwed up."

And that's where the guvnor comes in.  You see, Chris Christie and Rex Ryan are pals.  Ryan consulted Christie on his lap band surgery earlier this year.  This morning on WFAN Christie went on a rampage against Mehta calling him an idiot and a dope that mirrored Mehta's rampage against Ryan.  Video via Bob's Blitz

And you thought the Jets weren't a big enough circus last year?  Yeesh.  The only question that remains is which powerful entity shuts down this Christie/Ryan vs New York media feud first – Roger Goodell or the NSA.
