After a strong postseason so far, with fantastic ratings from the wild card games to the LCS, the World Series has tanked for MLB.
Wednesday's Game 1 between the Giants and Tigers drew 12.2 million viewers and a 7.6 rating – the worst ever for a Game 1. Those numbers are 13% (in viewers) and 14% (in ratings) down from 2011's Cardinals-Rangers matchup, and 15% (in viewers) and 18% (in ratings) from 2010's Giants-Rangers series.
In fact, Game 1 on Wednesday was the third lowest rated World Series game ever, and the least viewed game to not take place on a Saturday night. This is clearly not good news for baseball, and not the way that they wanted to end a largely successful postseason.
The ovenight numbers for Game 2 aren't very good either. It drew an 8.8 overnight, down 12% from last year's 10.0 rating for Game 2 and identical to the overnight from Game 2, in spite of it being a much closer game. Overnights also have game two drawing 10.22 million viewers, which will likely be adjusted up, but is still down from the 10.99 million viewers that game one drew on their overnights. This is not going the way MLB imagined.
