In late June, Diamondbacks play by play man Daron Sutton disappeared from the broadcast booth. Sutton was suspended indefinitely due to a personnel matter with the team, although the D'Backs were vague when it came to details. A couple days later, it was reported that Sutton was suspended for the crime against humanity that was wearing a suit instead of a D'Backs polo. What's even weirder about the Sutton situation is that his suspension is now dragging on into its second month with seemingly no end in sight.
Finally, additional word came from the Diamondbacks organization with president Derrick Hall telling ABC15 in Arizona there is no timetable for Sutton's return to the booth:
"Daron of course, I hired him, I extended him, he's a very important part of our history and who we are. It's been a culmination of events and unfortunately, I wish I could talk more about it, but when it comes to personnel issues, I don't think it would be fair for him or us if we talked anymore than to say there's no timetable on a return. It's an indefinite suspension. But we're fortunate to have guys like Greg Schulte and Jeff Munn that can step in and fill roles in the meantime," said Hall.
While there was furor over Sutton being suspended over his choice of wardrobe, it's clear there were plenty of other issues behind the scenes… it's just inconceivable for an announcer to be suspended that long over a suit. At this point, you have to wonder whether or not Sutton will ever return to the Diamondbacks booth. A month and a half (and probably longer) suspension in the middle of the baseball season doesn't bode well for his future with the franchise.
