The Decatur Daily out of Decatur, Alabama chose the headline "Bear Bryant now 2nd in all-time wins" as a lead story in their coverage of the Penn State sanctions handed down yesterday.  Above you can see the headline for the article and lede that has Alabama head coach Bear Bryant, who passed away in 1983, moving into second on the all-time I-A/FBS victories list.  Because in the wake of what happened at Penn State, Bear Bryant posthomously moving up the wins chart is obviously the real story here.

Even for an Alabama paper, this is definitely not the best angle to take out of the sanctions laid down at Penn State.  Perhaps the all-time wins list should not be a focus at all given what actually happened in State College, but nevertheless here we are.  Coaches passing Joe Paterno, universities harvesting the wounded remains of Penn State's roster, and all the football-related headlines unfortunately become the news now.

If I was Bobby Bowden, I'd tread very carefully… and avoid Alabama.
