I don’t know if he knows anything about calling sports, but as we know all too well here at AA, that’s not a job requisite. What he does have is an underdog story and a most unexpectedly smooth baritone with plenty of honey in it. And certainly the radio face it takes to be the next Handsome Dan.
Ted Williams was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He was blessed with the gift of a great radio voice, but as he tells the Columbus Dispatch in this video, alcohol and drugs and “a few other things” derailed his career. Williams is now two years clean and panhandling for change on the side of the highway, but hopefully someone will see this incredibly powerful short clip and pick him up soon.
His sign reads: “I have a God-given gift of voice. I’m an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be greatfully [sic] appreciated.”
Well, sign me up. Even if he slips back into alcoholism and drug use on-air, I’m sure you Buckeye fans out there would rather listen to him than Mark May and Dr. Lou.
Since this video’s been floating around the Interwebz, Ted’s been scheduled to appear on The Morning Zoo tomorrow, January 5th, at 7:15am EST. If that’s not too early for you you can tune in HERE. An astute commenter also points out that he seems like a great fit to appear on the Howard Stern Show, which wouldn’t surprise me in the least, given Howard’s obsession with 1. radio voices and 2. homeless people.
UPDATE: Aaaaaaand since the Internet moves at ludicrious speed, @GoldenVoice614 is already up and tweeting (like mad), saying that he’s been getting offers left and right. Could be an evil-genius Twitter squatter, but if so, he’s sure doing a good job of seeming legit with all that “god is the boss” and “thank you for the support” talk, plus he’s got the lack of capitalization in there for good measure. Tasteful decision to avoid backwards letters. Probably a little too obvious.
