John Gruden has been a pleasant surprise on Monday Night Football, but he might be heading back to school before next season.  The University of Miami is pulling out all the stops in trying to hire the former coach who says that he is happy where he is.  Via ESPN….

A source close to the search said Tuesday night that Miami expects to speak with Gruden, who other Miami sources have indicated is still the Hurricanes’ top choice. Gruden, a former NFL coach for the Bucs and Raiders and currently a broadcaster for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” issued a statement Sunday night: “I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN. I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job.”

Miami has said it does not plan to confirm the names of any candidates until it makes a hire, and the university has not revealed a timetable for that move.

As I mentioned, Gruden has done a rather good job on MNF, and while he has some rough spots here and there, he is still getting the hang of it.  For the first time in years, MNF is actually watchable, and this team is 20 times better than any group in the past.  It would be a huge get for Miami if they swipped Gruden away from ESPN, but here’s to hoping they don’t.

Hurricanes Still Interested in Gruden (ESPN)
